Conductive compounds in power cables: why Premix is ready for the challenge

Post image

A new chapter, a familiar mission

I recently joined Premix after spending many years in the world of conductive plastics and carbon black across technical, sales, and marketing roles, and with experience in medium and high-voltage underground power cables.

From the outside, I found myself asking: what is Premix’s role in the power cable market? More specifically, how could an independent compounder become a successful new player in such a conservative industry dominated by polymer producers and cable manufacturers?

A bold statement into a demanding industry

I already knew the high level of expertise and genuine curiosity inside the company but tackling such highly demanding field - requiring over 30 years lifetime guarantee – and with such limited number of authorized players, it was like stepping into something very bold. Honestly, it scared me a little. I did not know yet the full power of innovation of the company.

It is true that Premix is a recognized global leader in conductive plastics for diagnostic pipette tips, operating under strict healthcare regulations. And yes, we are the only compounder in the world fully dedicated to electrically conductive plastics compounds and concentrates, with decades of know-how. That is a strong foundation. So why not apply this expertise to underground power cables?

From the inside, it all makes sense

Now that I have joined the team, it looks far more obvious. Yes, strategic investments were made, and risks were taken but always with care, clarity, and the determination to push boundaries. This was not a leap into the unknown. It was a logical step forward, built on the strong 40+ years conductivity knowhow, the global connections within the industry, the robust technical and production expertise, the overall commitment to succeed and to enlist all the necessary forces to get to the targets.

What I once saw as diversification, I now recognize as continuity.

Building the future one layer at a time

The infrastructure and power supply distribution are key for today and the next generations. Premix's motivation to contribute to this mission is clear: building the future with human, sustainable, entrepreneurial vision. It is not about jumping into trends, it is about building something lasting and responsible.

We start modest, with medium voltage grades, we build references, we earn trust. And yes, we are preparing to take on the high voltage segment next. Certifications take time. Testing is rigorous and specific. But we are progressing, with the right partners, in the right way.

What we are delivering today
Today, I am proud to say that we deliver not only PP/HPDE semicon compounds for insulation and conductor screens, and semiconductive compounds for cable jacketing — but also tailor-made solutions that go beyond the standard. What differentiates us from the big players is our willingness to innovate alongside our customers: developing novel concepts and solving the real-world challenges faced by cable manufacturers. One example of this is our newly developed semicon adhesive compound designed specifically for upcoming lead ban requirements. At Premix, we believe in partnerships — whether through tolling services or customized formulations — to help our customers bring safer, high-performance solutions to market with full confidence.
